The optical system, construction, and exterior are the same as the EF 75-300 mm f/4-5.6 III USM's. The difference is that it uses a DC motor instead of a USM to drive the AF.

What 75-300mm Actually Gets You

At 75mm, you're in portrait territory. At 300mm, you're pulling in subjects that are genuinely far away. That 4x zoom range covers a lot of ground: sideline sports shots, wildlife from a safe distance, candid photos across a room, or compressing a landscape for that stacked look.

On an APS-C crop sensor body like the Rebel series, the effective range becomes 120-480mm equivalent. That's serious reach. A soccer player at midfield fills the frame. A heron on the far side of a pond becomes a usable shot. For a first telephoto lens, that kind of range opens up subjects you simply can't get with a kit lens.

Lightweight Build, Straightforward Optics

13 elements in 9 groups. Super Spectra coating to control flare and ghosting. A seven-blade diaphragm that produces reasonably smooth bokeh at the long end. None of this is exotic, and that's fine. The lens does what it needs to do at a weight of 480g and dimensions of 71 x 122mm.

The 58mm filter thread accepts standard UV, polarizer, and ND filters. Front element rotates during focusing, which is worth knowing if you use a circular polarizer. The minimum focusing distance is 1.5m (about 5 feet), and maximum magnification hits 0.25x at 300mm. Not a macro lens, but you can get decent close-up detail at the long end.

EF Mount Compatibility and the Micro Motor AF

The EF mount fits every Canon EOS DSLR ever made. On mirrorless EOS R bodies, you need the EF-EOS R adapter, which maintains full autofocus. The lens itself uses a DC Micro Motor for AF. It works, but it's audible. If you're shooting video where mic pickup matters, manual focus is the better call.

For stills, the autofocus tracks moving subjects well enough for casual sports and wildlife. It's not Canon's fastest AF motor, the USM version of this lens handles that better, but for the price difference, most people shooting daytime sports or outdoor events will find it perfectly adequate. Canon backs it with a 1-year warranty.

Who Is This For?

First-Time DSLR Owner Adding Reach

Your kit 18-55mm lens runs out of zoom fast. The EF 75-300mm picks up exactly where it leaves off. School plays, backyard birds, the view from a lookout point. At 480g and an entry-level price, it's the logical second lens for any Rebel or EOS kit.

Parent on the Sidelines

Soccer, hockey warmups, track and field. Kids are far away and moving fast. At 300mm on a Rebel body, you're pulling them in close enough to see their expression. The lightweight build means you're not lugging a heavy rig to every Saturday morning game.

Casual Wildlife and Nature Photographer

You don't need a 600mm f/4 to photograph herons at the park or deer on a trail in Gatineau. The 75-300mm gets you close enough for solid shots in good light. Toss it in your camera bag alongside your kit lens and you're covered from 18mm to 300mm for a day of hiking.

FAQ

Yes. EF 75-300mm III mounts directly on Canon EOS DSLRs (EF mount). On EOS R mirrorless, use the EF-EOS R adapter. On APS-C, it gives a ≈120-480mm field of view.

No. EF 75-300mm III does not include IS. If your camera has IBIS, it helps; otherwise use faster shutter speeds.

Optics are the same. USM version uses an Ultrasonic motor for faster, quieter AF, while the standard EF 75-300mm III uses a Micro Motor (DC).

Not really. Minimum focus is ~1.5 m and max magnification 0.25× at 300 mm. It’s a telephoto zoom, not a dedicated macro.

EF 75-300mm III is f/4 at 75 mm and f/5.6 at 300 mm. The aperture changes as you zoom, which is typical for this class.

The standard EF 75-300mm III uses a Micro Motor. For quicker and quieter AF, consider the USM version. Otherwise, use good light and fast shutter speeds.

58 mm filters. The front element rotates during focusing, so polarizers need a bit more care.

About 480 g, roughly 71 × 122 mm. EF 75-300mm III stays compact and lightweight for a 300 mm zoom.

Yes for starters. EF 75-300mm III offers useful reach at a friendly price. For low-light action, consider stabilized or USM options if budget allows.
